RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how British military are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
