At least 11 of the weather balloons, transporting 18,000 packs of illegal cigarettes, have now been retrieved

Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.

Air Travel Interruptions

The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.

Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend

While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."

So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.

Cross-Border Effects

At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.

Criminal Methodology

When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Law Enforcement Objectives

Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."

International Concerns

These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.

Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
